Montreal mayor opposes law forcing burqa-wearing women to show faces to access public services
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre is challenging the Province of Quebec for “forcing Muslim women to uncover their faces if they want access to public services.” Should Coderre succeed, the public will be put at risk, not because of so-called “Islamophobia,” but because there have been widespread jihad attacks throughout the West and continued calls from the Islamic State calls and al Qaeda to attack Western civilians. Anyone can cover his or her face with a burqa or niqab. It is the right of the public and in the interest of all Westerners to continue the practice of outlawing face masks in public.
The burqa is also a symbol of female oppression and degradation throughout the Islamic world, and now in the Western hemisphere.
Recently, I had a medical practitioner confide in me that it is a horror to her team when Muslim women in burqas walk behind their husbands, and their husbands answer their personal medical questions for them. When it comes time for blood pressure checks or blood tests, that medical professionals often observe bruises and burns, but remain silent so as to not rock the boat. This represents the pervasive and dangerous gag order that has been forcefully imposed on a once-free Western society. To be enablers of this abuse of Muslim women who arrive on Western soil is unconscionable, as are FGM, honor killings and the general subjugation of women. This is the kind of abuse that Coderre is advocating for in the name of tolerance. As the Daily Caller article below points out:
The municipal-provincial spat is just the latest between the liberal and comopolitan metropolis and the rest of a province that is increasingly insistent that immigrants adapt to the majority culture.
Alarmingly:
Mayor Denis Coderre, who continues to welcome thousands of illegal refugees into his city every week, said Friday the Quebec legislation will force even bus drivers in Montreal to become “burqa police.”
There are a few other troubling things about Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre:
- He signed a quiet deal with Iran to boost “mutual cooperation.” This was despite the fact that the Conservative Harper government shut down Iran’s embassy in Ottawa, given its expansionary ambitions as a terrorist regime. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird’s press secretary Rick Roth stated that “diplomatic collapse was ‘the result of Iran’s own actions,’ including its support for the Syrian regime, nuclear program, ‘racist rhetoric’ and failure to protect foreign embassies.” The sudden decision to close the embassy was more broadly due to the revelation of a tight network of Iranian terrorists expanding as a “fifth column” in Canada.
- In February, Coderre pushed for Montreal to become a “sanctuary city” for migrants, and tweeted to undermine Trump: “Message to Donald @POTUS Trump. Montreal proud ‘Sanctuary City’ Newcomers & refugees are welcome. Diversity is our strength and part of our DNA.”
- Coderre has been lenient in cracking down on the spread of jihadist sentiments in his city. Following the jihad attack in Brussels, the Mayor of Quebec City, Régis Labeaume, stated that greater scrutiny of mosques was needed. Coderre shot down Labeaume’s idea, calling it “profiling.” Coderre also flatly denied that jihad messages are being spread from mosques, and blamed only the Internet for such messages.
Coderre has been operating in foreign interests, not in the interests of Montreal or of Canada. Rather noteworthy — and also confusing — is a mixed message from former Liberal Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion, who stated, according to the National Post, that “the Liberal government isn’t about to stop calling the Islamic Republic a state sponsor of terror.”
In contrast to the efforts by Mayor Coderre to undermine Canadian unity, now showing up again in this most recent burqa debate, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard is correct and well reasoned in his analysis:
It’s not a matter of dictating to people in Montreal how to dress. We’re just talking about a clear and simple principle: having an uncovered face to give and receive public services, for reasons of communications, identification and safety.

The mayor of sanctuary city Montreal doesn’t want to enforce a provincial law that would force Muslim women to uncover their faces if they want access to pubic services.
Mayor Denis Coderre, who continues to welcome thousands of illegal refugees into his city every week, said Friday the Quebec legislation will force even bus drivers in Montral to become “burqa police.”
The municipal-provincial spat is just the latest between the liberal and comopolitan metropolis and the rest of a province that is increasingly insistent that immigrants adapt to the majority culture.
Bill 62 was introduced by the Liberal provincial government and merely dictates that both government clerks dispensing government services and those receiving them cannot cover their face. It says nothing about Muslim women or the the wearing of the burqa.
The legislation was only supposed to relate to areas of provincial jurisdiction but Quebec’s justice minister decided to expand the law to cover municipal services and even those operating public transit.
Coderre, a former federal immigration minister in the Liberal government of Jean Chretien, proclaimed Montreal a sanctuary city in February, just as asylum seekers began to pour across the Quebec border from New York. On Friday he rejected the province’s order that municipal authorities will enforce the law, suggesting it would be difficult if not impossible to do so.
“Are we going to say to the driver, ‘I’ve become the burqa or niqab police, and I’ll decide who gets on the bus or not?’” Coderre asked at a news conference at Montreal city hall. “And if the driver says you can come in, will we have citizens who take the law into their own hands?”
But Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said there could be no municipal exceptions to the law.
“This law will apply throughout Quebec,” he said to reporters on Friday. “We can’t allow Quebec’s biggest city, its metropolis, not be part of the same landscape.”….
