Is the RNC threatening to abandon the Trump campaign?

Can Trump rescue his poll numbers and regain Reince Priebus’ trust?

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus informed Donald Trump that should he fail to turn his campaign around, the national party will shift its focus and resources to House and Senate races, reports Time magazine’s Zeke J. Miller, citing two unnamed GOP officials familiar on the matter.

Priebus allegedly told Trump, “he would have been better off had he spent the days since the Republican convention at his Mar-a-Lago Club,” as internal polling numbers indicated a very rough road to the White House for the RNC..

Reached for comment by Time, Trump denied the officials’ account of the exchange, saying “Reince Priebus is a terrific guy” and that the chairman “never said that.”

Recent polls have not been favorable to the Republican presidential nominee. Hillary Clinton is currently leading Trump by seven points in the Real Clear Politics (RCP) average of national polls. Additionally, Trump is underperforming in traditionally red states. Two recent polls from Georgia show Clinton leading Trump in the Peach State. In Kansas, a state Romney won by 22 points, Trump is only leading Clinton by five points.

Trump is also underwater in swing states like Colorado, Ohio and Virginia, with Florida too close to call. In Pennsylvania, a state the Trump campaign believes they can be competitive in, Clinton has a plus-9.2 lead in the RCP average.

Early voting starts in mid-September. With the state of the race such as it is, is there time for Donald Trump to turn his campaign around, and regain the trust and full backing of the Republican Party?
