The sex attacks that took place in Cologne on New Year’s Eve were simply a “matter of public order” and had nothing to do with the refugee crisis, [EU Commission president] Jean-Claude Juncker’s inner circle believe. The European Commission will be the “voice of reason” and tell the public that there is no link between the migration crisis affecting the continent and attacks on women in Germany, internal minutes disclose, amid growing concerns at a “xenophobic” backlash.

“No,” said the young George Washington, “I cannot be the voice of reason. I cut down that cherry tree.”

The minutes of the European Commission’s weekly cabinet meeting from January 13 hint at officials’ fears that the events in Cologne could turn public opinion sharply against the million migrants who have entered Europe. They spell out Mr Juncker’s frustration at the inaction of national governments under pressure from voters, and suggest a sense of panic that the inability to halt a growing volume of economic migrants could undermine the “credibility” of the European project….
On the other hand:
The [German] interior ministry, days after the attacks, said that “people with a migration background were almost exclusively responsible for the criminal acts”
Oh.
Of course, the large majority of migrants would have nothing to do with the sort of attacks seen in Cologne on New Year’s Eve. But for “voices of reason” to suggest that the Cologne events were unconnected with the vast wave of migration into Germany in recent years is not only absurd, but to invite just the sort of ‘populist’ backlash that Brussels is always so eager to condemn.
And check out Juncker’s priorities. His real concern was not for victims in Cologne, but for the “credibility” of the European project that has done so much to make matters worse.
Meanwhile, how are things going in Sweden?
Swedish police have had to act on more than 5,000 incidents concerning asylum accommodation and other issues concerning migrants since October, according to figures obtained by a Swedish newspaper.The Dagens Nyheter newspaper recently revealed that the police have designated a special code, R291, for incidents involving asylum seekers and refugees, allowing them to keep tabs on how last autumn’s record influx of asylum seekers into the country has affected their work.
According to SvD’s collation of all R291 cases, police have been called out to no fewer than 559 registered assaults, 450 fights, 194 cases of violent threats, 58 fires, two bomb threats, nine robberies and four rapes, all involving recently arrived asylum seekers.
“The unrest in asylum accommodation is something that requires more and more of us,” Sweden’s police commissioner Dan Eliasson told SvD after the figures were released. “I am concerned about these developments. I fear that there may be even more trouble, I think the trend points in that direction. If we analyze this carefully, there is an increasing problem.”
But note this too (my emphasis added):
The code covers all cases “involving migrant situation[s]”, including cases where asylum seekers are victims or perpetrators of crimes.
