1 Timothy 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Many people have difficulty praying for leaders with whom they may disagree politically. In today’s highly charged atmosphere, where media puts a political spin on virtually every topic on which they report, it is hard to avoid being influenced or at the least confused about our nation.
Let’s take a closer look at the admonition above, reminding us to pray “for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
The reference then goes on to tell us the reasoning behind asking us to pray for those in authority. “This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
It seems on the face of it, that the reason to pray for those in authority is to further advance the witness of the gospel, to further extend the borders of the kingdom of God, to please God our Savior.
I don’t know how many people I have met who were laboring under the thought that praying for our leaders when they happen to be members of an opposing political party is tantamount to agreeing with their political goals.
Christ himself said His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate wondered why Jesus didn’t appear to defend himself.
John 19:10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
Jesus answer was interesting.
John 19:11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
God is not about political parties or political squabbling. Our hope doesn’t come from Washington D.C.
Our hope is found in God. So if we want influence over Washington’s policies, or influence over a president, senator, congressman, mayor or anyone else in government, the most direct way is to petition THE BOSS.
Pray to God the Father (who draws people to himself) that the government authority figure will be drawn into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
This is the FIRST STEP to take in expanding the kingdom of God. It is difficult to hate a politician if you are praying for their soul daily.
SO let us pray!
