Bergdahl Pleads Guilty to Desertion and Misbehavior Before the Enemy

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who deserted his post and was captured by the Taliban in 2009, has pleaded guilty in his court-martial, the New York Times reported Monday.

He was charged with desertion, which carries a potential five-year sentence, and with misbehavior — essentially, endangering the troops who were sent to search for him — which carries a potential life sentence.

A colleague of mine–a veteran U.S. Army officer–who served in Afghanistan at the same time Bergdahl was there told me a week or so ago, “I was there. He deserted.” I totally believe it and never doubted that Bergdahl acted on some weird mission to see what life with the Taliban was like.

He found out what it was like to live as a hostage for five years, which I daresay is probably worse treatment than he’ll get as a federal inmate in a military prison.

It won’t bring back the lives lost searching for him. For that, he should get a life sentence. Anything shorter–or some Democrat president in the future letting him out–will make another celebrity traitor a darling on the left, like Bradley (Chelsea) Manning. If only we could get back the five terrorists Obama traded for this traitor.

I retch at the thought. Especially in light of the memory of Bergdahl’s father’s behavior standing alongside President Obama. Bergdahl’s defense team tried to tie President Trump’s statements to his ability to receive a fair trial–the judge called it “troubling” but not prejudiced. As if reciting the Shadaha and speaking in Farsi from the White House isn’t troubling.

Apparently Bergdahl’s lawyers agreed that President Trump’s statements, calling their client a “traitor” weren’t enough to move a military court-martial (or convince the judge) to let him go on the basis of a “fair trial.”

So they pled guilty, because Bergdahl is guilty. Now to lock him up for as long as possible.
