Think North Korea is more joke than threat? Sure … until it fires a missile

The North Korean regime has produced miniaturized nuclear warheads that can fit on intercontinental ballistic missiles that can travel across the Pacific Ocean and destroy American cities, potentially killing millions of Americans.

This sobering report comes from the Washington Post, which also recounted how the communist regime in North Korea, led by the mentally unstable dictator Kim Jong Un, is now in possession of as many as 60 nuclear weapons, according to U.S. analysts.

The findings are likely to deepen concerns about an evolving North Korean military threat that appears to be advancing far more rapidly than many experts had predicted. U.S. officials last month concluded that Pyongyang is also outpacing expectations in its effort to build an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking cities on the American mainland.

“The IC [intelligence community] assesses North Korea has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, to include delivery by ICBM-class missiles,” the assessment states, in an excerpt read to The Washington Post. The assessment’s broad conclusions were verified by two U.S. officials familiar with the document. It is not yet known whether the reclusive regime has successfully tested the smaller design, although North Korea officially last year claimed to have done so.

The Washington Post’s report has been confirmed by NBC News. How serious is this?

Russian interference in the 2016 election has no effect if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Affordable health care is worthless if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Climate change is irrelevant if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Entitlement reform is meaningless if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Taxes won’t be too high if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

A border wall protects no one if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Free markets don’t matter if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Infrastructure is immaterial if you die in a nuclear holocaust.

Today’s North Korea news is deadly serious. It is the single most important issue facing the Trump administration, facing the Congress, facing the American people, period.

Do I overstate the threat? North Korea has been posturing for decades — threatening the U.S. with nuclear destruction in its propaganda without ever taking credible action against the United States.

It is tempting to think of the regime as an unserious, bloviating joke.

Until they fire that missile.

The decisions President Trump will make regarding North Korea in the following weeks will be some of the most consequential decisions made by a U.S. president in this nation’s history. They will define this presidency. He cannot fail.

He must not fail.
