Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. has no idea how firearm suppressors work. But that’s not stopping her from trying to ban them.
Republicans Jeff Duncan, R-S.C. and John Carter, R-Texas have introduced the Hearing Protection Act in Congress. The bill would deregulate gun silencers for the purpose of letting individuals who want to purchase them to protect their hearing while they use their firearms do so without onerous government regulations.
In a press release statement, Gillibrand announced her opposition to the GOP bill.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), representatives from law enforcement, and gun violence prevention advocates today vowed to block an effort currently underway in Congress to make it easier for criminals to obtain gun silencers. Gillibrand said she would fight against legislation introduced earlier this year in the Senate (S.59) and House of Representatives (H.R. 367) to eliminate gun silencers from the requirements of the National Firearms Act, making it easier for criminals to obtain these deadly weapons, making it harder and more dangerous for law enforcement to catch criminals.
“These deadly gun silencers pose a huge risk to our enforcement and our communities and I will do everything I can to stop this ill-thought-out legislation that would allow more criminals to get their hands on these dangerous weapons,” she said, according the New York Daily News.
An idiotic statement, for several reasons. Firstly, there’s nothing stopping criminals from getting their hands on gun silencers. As the folks over at BearingArms.com point out, you can make one yourself with about $30 in raw materials. Secondly, suppressors aren’t “dangerous weapons.” They’re a weapon accessory — one that, thirdly, does not “silence” the gun like you’d think it would if everything you know about firearms was learned from Hollywood.
I'm fighting back against bills (backed by the Trump admin) that'd make it easy for criminals to buy gun silencers. https://t.co/m1uFZNOBYI

Can you imagine if we allowed a criminal with a gun in New York City to attach a silencer to their weapon? It'd be a dangerous mistake.

How can we end violence in our communities if criminals can get easy access to equipment that'd make it hard for police to solve gun crimes?

Let's keep our communities safe from gun violence and keep gun silencers out of the hands of criminals. I hope you'll speak out on this.

This is completely false. Guns shot with suppressors are still very loud, just not hearing damaging loud https://t.co/z5YbzaEzXD

A gun with a suppressor is still 130-150dB. If you can’t hear a jet engine from 50 feet away, “silencers” aren’t your problem. https://t.co/3iYLV7z23x
