Obama’s appeasement has worked out so so well.
A prominent member of the Iranian regime’s parliament has threatened to destroy a United States naval base in the Middle East in the event of an American “mistake” against Tehran.
Mojtaba Zonour, a senior member of the majilis and a former advisor to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), made the comments over the weekend, according to the Iran-based Fars News Agency.
“The U.S. army’s fifth fleet has occupied a part of Bahrain,” Zonour said. “These points are all within range of Iran’s missile systems and they will be razed to the ground If the enemy makes a mistake,” he continued.
Zonour added that “only 7 minutes is needed for the Iranian missile to hit Tel Aviv,” making a direct statement to Israel as well.
The remarks were complemented by an IRGC commander, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who also made attempts to intimidate the U.S. this weekend.
“If the enemy makes a mistake our roaring missiles will hit their targets,” Hajizadeh said, referring to the U.S.
Iran’s escalating rhetoric comes amidst massive military drills set to take place this week in the northern part of the country. Iran plans on test firing several mid- to long-range missile systems.
President Donald Trump’s administration declared last week that Iran has been put “on notice” for its violations of international treaties regarding the testing of ballistic missiles. Trump has promised to move the U.S. to a different footing versus past administrations dealing with the Iranian regime.
“They don’t appreciate how ‘kind’ President Obama was to them,” Trump tweeted Friday. The Obama administration appeased Iran with a $150 billion windfall of cash as part of the deal signed with Iran and world powers in 2015.
Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis echoed the assessments of previous administrations in a statement over the weekend, recognizing Iran as the world’s foremost sponsor of international terrorism.
The Iranian regime aids and finances several terrorist groups in the Middle East, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthi insurgents in Yemen. After its Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran took a strikingly anti-American position.
The regime in Tehran continues to view the United States as an “enemy” because it opposes their Islamic Caliphatist ideology. Iran and its proxies have committed several terrorist attacks against the United States and produced many of the IEDs that killed American soldiers in Iraq.
