And the problem with the RNC, as usual, is that it enlists the pretentious pretenders of Beltway elite to vet our candidates
Who is the moderator of tonight’s South Carolina GOP debate? He’s another not-so-moderate, card-carrying member of the D.C. media ruling class.
John Dickerson is the host of Face the Nation on CBS News, political director for the network, and a longtime political correspondent for Slate and Time magazine. If there were ever a poster boy for inside-the-Beltway journalism, Dickerson is it.
As the New York Times glowingly recounts in a profile today, he enjoyed a “gilded upbringing.” His “mother was Nancy Dickerson, a network news correspondent of the 1960s and 1970s.”
His father was East Coast real estate mogul C. Wyatt Dickerson. The birth of John to the D.C. power couple “warranted a story in The Washington Post, and his childhood home, the Merrywood, had 35 rooms and a view of the Potomac, and was the site of many Washington establishment dinner parties.”
Dickerson attended the exclusive Sidwell Friends School, home to the Obama girls and Chelsea Clinton. After earning an English degree at the University of Virginia, he embarked on a gilded political journalism career in print (12 years at Time magazine) and radio (including regular appearances on the Al Franken show on defunct Air America Radio) before succeeding Bob Schieffer at Face the Nation.
Perhaps most notoriously, Dickerson penned a screed last year advising President Obama to “Go for the Throat!”; “declare war on the Republican Party;” and “pulverize” his political enemies over gun control, climate change, and immigration.
Dickerson took offense at conservatives who criticized his obvious bias. Instead, he condescendingly arguing that he was just offering “analysis.” And his liberal D.C. media friends backed him up, looking down their noses at dumb readers with “little brain activity” who couldn’t comprehend how he was merely “deploying an uncustomary literary device to deliver information.”
Now, imagine any conservative columnist or right-leaning political analyst calling on Republicans to “destroy” Democrats and “pulverize” Obama, arguing that they really didn’t mean it because it was a “literary device;” and then being allowed to moderate a Democratic presidential debate.
As usual, the problem with these privileged left-leaning “analysts” isn’t their bias. It’s their pretense of objectivity.
