How Much Longer Can America Survive?

I have often been called a negative naysayer when it comes to political discourse. Bemoaning the current state of affairs seems to be the one note upon which my political symphony anchors. I would love to be more optimistic. Really I would…

I would love to see how we are getting better and better, and stronger and freer as a nation. I would love to applaud the accomplishment of statesmen who call evil what it is and stand on principle  against the onrushing tide of corruption.

Really I would…

There is only one problem. The human heart.

Read Genesis 6:5

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Or Jeremiah 17:9

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Jesus said that in the last days it would be as it was in the days of Noah … see Genesis 6:5    above.

Salvation will not come from the chattering political class in Washington.

I would love to sing the praises of the next great HOPE of the upcoming conservative class.  Really I would.

Been there. Done that.  Remember the Contract with America of the Newt Gingrich days? The burgeoning optimism and wave of Republicans that were swept into office? Did those Junior Republicans shake up the old boy network?

Not much, and today they are just another example of the “go along to get along” party. Now our Republic (I use that term very lightly) is freshly renewed with a “Republican Majority” in both houses of congress. Should we rejoice that the apparent result is that Democrats Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi seem even more in control of the process than they were prior to the election?

Should we be happy that an uniformed, even reckless President is continually allowed to have his way, stepping on the separation of powers with impunity?

We have listened to institutional Repubicans cry wolf with dismay, “Only give us a majority and we will stop this madness”!!

And (as if we have never heard it before) we give them control and what do they do? The same thing they always do:  “Remember, how before the election we were certain we could really fix things? Well, it turns out (again) to be a little more complicated and we need a more “nuanced” and “less harsh” approach to slow down the headlong rush to oblivion. “Harsh rhetoric” only makes our adversaries angry, and we certainly don’t want anyone to call us “mean spirited” because that might hurt. Besides, confrontation never solves anything.”

Should we be happy about this? I would like to think things will change. Really I would.

Then I look longingly at this: Click here.

And hope shrinks again.

Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus!  If you are going to place your hope in something or someone….Choose Jesus.  He alone will restore justice, mercy, compassion, righteousness and Peace.

Yes, you can keep voting those politicians into office. Yes you can write letters and demand action. But don’t for a moment think that any lasting solution will come from political action. All you will do is created a little ripple  in a backwater pool on the side of the rushing river as it heads to Niagara Falls and the waiting rocks below.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  Galatians 6:7
